TDK is expanding its line of data storage cartridges to include a super high-density 4mm data cartridge designed for use in DDS-3 drives. The TDK DC4-125R data cartridge, which is in full compliance with DDS-3 format standards, utilizes a number of innovative technologies to achieve an unprecedented native storage capacity of 12 GB -- three times the capacity of DDS-2 data cartridges.
The three-fold increase in storage capacity achieved by the DDS-3 format is made possible by a doubling of linear track density to 122 kpbi, plus a 50% increase in format efficiency. Several enabling technologies combine to give DDS-3 its outstanding data storage capacity, including the use of a higher coercivity MP++ metal particle formulation in the data cartridge, as well as improvements in the head-to-tape interface, error correction, and data allocation.
The 4mm DDS format has earned a reputation for exceptional reliability and performance among professional users involved in a wide range of data intensive multimedia activities. DDS has also established itself as a key option in network backup, image processing and archiving.
DC4-125R data cartridges will be available in January 1997. TDK's 4mm data cartridge line also includes the DC4-120 4mm DDS-2 format cartridge, delivering 4.0 GB of data storage capacity, the DC4-90 data cartridge with 2.0 GB storage capacity and the DC4-60, a 60-meter cartridge with a storage capacity of 1.3 GB.
